Figure of speech

figure of speech is a word or phrase that possesses a separate meaning from its literal definition. It can be a metaphor or simile, designed to make a comparison. It can be the repetition of alliteration or the exaggeration of hyperbole to provide a dramatic effect.

In truth, there are a wealth of these literary tools in the English language. But, let's start out by exploring some of the most common figure of speech examples.

Alliteration

Contoh:

  • The wild walrus waits and wonders when we’ll walk by.
  • She sells seashells.
  • Walter wondered where Winnie was.
  • Blue baby bonnets bobbed through the bayou.
  • Nick needed new notebooks.
  • Fred fried frogs’ legs on Friday.

Metaphore

Misalnya:

  • Heart of stone
  • Time is money
  • The world is a stage
  • She’s a night owl
  • He’s an ogre

Onomatopoeia

Contoh:

  • The flowers nodded.
  • The snowflakes danced.
  • The thunder grumbled.
  • The fog crept in.
  • The wind howled.

Simile

Simile memiliki ciri khas kata like, as, atau similar to.  Contoh:

  • As slippery as an eel
  • Like peas in a pod
  • As blind as a bat
  • Eats like a pig
  • As wise as an owl

Hyperbole

Contoh:

  • I’ve told you to stop a thousand times.
  • That must have cost a billion dollars.
  • I could do this forever.
  • She’s older than dirt.
  • Everybody knows that.

Anaphora

Contoh:

  • I came, I saw, I conquered. – Julius Caesar
  • Mad world! Mad kings! Mad composition! – King John II, William Shakespeare
  • It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness. – A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens
  • With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right. – Abraham Lincoln

Assonance

Contoh:

  • A – For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels named Lenore. (Poe)
  • E – Therefore, all seasons shall be sweet to thee. (Coleridge)
  • I – From what I’ve tasted of desire, I hold with those who favor fire. (Frost)
  • O – Oh hear old Triton blow his wreathed horn. (Wordsworth)
  • U – Uncertain rustling of each purple curtain (Poe)

Synecdoche

Ricky Montgomery, " Line Without a Hook".

Lyrics :
I don't really give a damn about the way you touch me
When we're alone
You can hold my hand
If no one's home
Do you like it when I'm away?
If I went and hurt my body, baby
Would you love me the same?
I can feel all my bones coming back
And I'm craving motion
Mama never really learns how to live by herself
It's a curse
And it's growing
You're a pond and I'm an ocean
Oh, all my emotions
Feel like explosions when you are around
And I've found a way to kill the sounds, oh
Oh, baby, I am a wreck when I'm without you
I need you here to stay
I broke all my bones that day I found you
Crying at the lake
Was it something I said to make you feel like you're a burden?
Oh, and if I could take it all back
I swear that I would pull you from the tide
Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa
I said no (I said no), I said no (I said no)
Listen close, it's a no
The wind is a-pounding on my back
And I found hope in a heart attack
Oh at last, it is past
Now I've got it, and you can't have it
Baby, I am a wreck when I'm without you
I need you here to stay
I broke all my bones that day I found you
Crying at the lake
Was it something I said to make you feel like you're a burden, oh
And if I could take it all back
I swear that I would pull you from the tide
Darling, when I'm fast asleep
I've seen this person watching me
Saying, "Is it worth it? Is it worth it? Tell me, is it worth it?" Oh
Guess there is something, and there is nothing
There is nothing in between
And in my eyes, there is a tiny dancer
Watching over me, he's singing
"She's a, she's a lady, and I am just a boy"
He's singing, "She's a, she's a lady, and I am just a line without a hook"
Baby, I am a wreck when I'm without you
I need you here to stay
I broke all my bones that day I found you
Crying at the lake
Was it something I said to make you feel like you're a burden, oh
And if I could take it all back
I swear that I would pull you from the tide

"Hotel California" by the eagles

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face
They livin’ it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise (what a nice surprise)

In this song's excerpt, the Eagles compares the fickle, temporary, and fake nature of all of the glamor found in a western part of Hollywood to a brief stay in a hotel. Nobody knew how long it would take them to be famous, so they had to make the most of it.
